Why does WordPress constantly need to be updated?

As you probably know, WordPress is a very popular website platform and just like any other software that is popular, there are bad actors out there that are trying to hack it and use it for their own benefits.

The Problem

Hackers will try to find vulnerable websites that are running WordPress and install malware on them. The malware will then either redirect the visitors to some spammy website or will scam people out of their money. There are so many different scams that they can run once they are in, it is scary.

Before we get into this, let me introduce to you WPStrike. We protect your website by manually, going through it every single month, updating, scanning and checking for issues and making sure the website is live so you don’t have to, so you can focus on your business! Click Here To Find Out More

This Was Scary!

Just a few weeks ago, I was doing a website rescue on a client’s website. The hackers got in there and installed a back door into it, through which they then installed a plugin called (and I couldn’t believe it) “United Bangladesh Hackers”.

Through this console window, they can install all kinds of scary stuff on the server.

After digging some more I found a very real looking, fake Bank Of America page that had a form on it that collected all the customer’s information that is needed to suck someone’s bank account dry. If someone landed on that page, they would never know that it’s a fake page, unless they look at the URL of course. This is why you ALWAYS check the URL of the page where you are entering sensitive information. It should be a habit.

What Do Updates Do?

When you update the plugins, theme and WordPress core, this closes any known open doors the hackers can get through. This is not to say that it will be impossible for them but you limit the risk significantly by updating.

Plugin and theme owners, as well as WordPress core team will constantly watch for new creative ways the hackers will break into the system and build patches to cover those holes. Once a month or so, they will publish these patches as build updates and you want to make sure to update your setup quickly.

So What Do I Need To Do?

Your mission if you choose to accept it is to:

  1. Check for Plugin updates and update them monthly.
  2. Check for Theme updates and update them monthly.
  3. Check for WordPress core updates and update them monthly.
  4. Remove any unused themes and plugins.
  5. Remove or replace plugins that are not being updated regularly.
  6. Make monthly backups, so you can quickly come back in case you get hacked.
  7. Install a security scanning plugin.

You can do all this yourself or hire some one to do it, but I recommend hiring us. We are much more affordable than a consultant or an employee. And I am sure you have better things to do than all those things listed above.

Whatever you do, do not leave without planning a solution for this or you will regret it like many people I talk to all the time that come to me after their site has been hacked. Prevention is the key. Sign up today.
